Originating in Australia, it was later introduced to North Africa and the Mediterranean. The essential oils extracted from its leaves are a pale yellow colour and have a fresh aromatic smell. It has many medicinal properties. The principal component is Eucalyptol which has strong antiseptic properties. Recently it has been shown that Eucalyptus has hypoglycemiant properties.
Excellent in the treatment of respiratory problems, it is an efficacious remedy for coughs, asthma, bronchitis, runny nose and the fever which accompanies the flu. It is also used in the treatment of cystitis and skin problems, cuts and burns. Finally it acts as a stimulant in respect of the nervous system.
