The Romans prescribed myrtle in wine form for sufferers from gastric weakness. Two varieties are used, the one giving a red coloured essential oil and the other yielding a green oil.
It is a useful antiseptic for the respiratory tracts and the genitalia. It is an anti-inflammatory which tones and energises. It is indicated for eye infections and also used for pharyngitis, tracheitis and pulmonary problems.
